The Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA) is promoting more efficient and sustainable management of agricultural water resources as Ghana works towards building a resilient and productive agricultural sector.
Water is one of the most important resources required for agricultural production. However, increasing pressure on water resources, changing rainfall patterns and growing demand for food make effective water management increasingly important.
GIDA’s mandate includes the development of Ghana’s water resources for irrigated farming, livestock improvement and fish farming, as well as the formulation of plans for the sustainable management of water and related resources.
The Authority is therefore supporting approaches that encourage efficient use of irrigation water while improving the performance of irrigation infrastructure.
Modern irrigation management can help farmers make better use of available water by applying water according to crop requirements, soil conditions and production schedules. Effective water management can also reduce unnecessary losses and contribute to improved land productivity.
GIDA is also strengthening collaboration with research and technical institutions to improve knowledge and decision-making in agricultural water management. In 2024, the Authority signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) to deepen collaboration in sustainable water management, including research into rainfall prediction and water-resource modelling.
Such collaborations can support the application of data, modelling, satellite technologies and other modern tools in irrigation planning and water-resource management.
For GIDA, sustainable irrigation is not simply about providing water to farms. It is about ensuring that water resources and irrigation infrastructure are managed efficiently enough to support agricultural production today while protecting their value for future generations.
Through improved planning, technology, research and farmer capacity development, the Authority continues to promote agricultural water management as a foundation for sustainable agricultural growth in Ghana.
