The Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA) is placing renewed emphasis on the rehabilitation and modernization of existing irrigation schemes as part of efforts to improve agricultural productivity and ensure the sustainable use of irrigation infrastructure.
Many irrigation facilities across Ghana have supported farming communities for decades. However, ageing infrastructure and maintenance challenges have affected the efficiency and productive capacity of some schemes.
GIDA has therefore identified the rehabilitation of existing infrastructure as an important component of its irrigation development agenda. Rehabilitation works can help restore irrigation capacity, improve water delivery and create better conditions for farmers to increase production.
Recent rehabilitation initiatives have demonstrated the potential of upgraded irrigation infrastructure to transform farming communities. At the Ashaiman Irrigation Scheme, for example, rehabilitation works have been accompanied by farmer capacity-building activities focusing on water-use efficiency, crop management and irrigation scheduling.
The approach goes beyond physical infrastructure. GIDA recognizes that the long-term success of irrigation schemes also depends on the ability of farmers and Water Users Associations to effectively manage and maintain the facilities.
Farmer training, demonstration plots and improved irrigation practices are therefore being incorporated into interventions to strengthen the human capacity required to sustain irrigation investments.
The Authority’s broader mandate includes providing technical and managerial services for the development and effective use of irrigation facilities, while supporting farmers and related industries.
By combining infrastructure rehabilitation with improved water management and farmer capacity development, GIDA aims to maximize the benefits of existing irrigation investments and contribute to increased agricultural production across Ghana.
