The Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA) is strengthening efforts to expand and improve irrigation infrastructure across the country as part of ongoing initiatives to promote sustainable agricultural production and enhance food security.
Irrigation remains an important component of Ghana’s agricultural development, particularly as farmers increasingly face changing rainfall patterns and the need to produce food throughout the year. GIDA’s mandate includes the planning, development and management of irrigation and agricultural water management infrastructure to support farmers and other users of agricultural water resources.
The Authority is focused on improving the efficiency and reliability of irrigation systems while supporting the development of new irrigation opportunities at different scales, ranging from small and community-managed schemes to larger irrigation developments.
GIDA’s approach also places emphasis on the effective management of existing water resources. This includes the rehabilitation and modernization of irrigation infrastructure, improved water management practices and strengthening the capacity of farmers and Water Users Associations to manage irrigation facilities effectively.
Through these interventions, GIDA seeks to create an environment where farmers can reduce their dependence on seasonal rainfall, increase cropping intensity and improve agricultural productivity.
The Authority’s vision is to become a leader in the development, promotion and utilization of Ghana’s available water resources for agricultural purposes, contributing to food security and sustainable livelihoods.
As Ghana continues to pursue agricultural modernization, irrigation development will remain an important tool for unlocking the productive potential of the country’s agricultural lands and supporting farmers across the country.
