Expanding access to reliable irrigation has the potential to significantly increase agricultural production, strengthen rural livelihoods and create new opportunities across Ghana’s agricultural value chains.
For many farmers, agricultural production remains closely linked to the availability and timing of rainfall. Irrigation provides an opportunity to reduce this dependence and support more consistent production throughout the year.
The Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA) is mandated to develop and promote the use of Ghana’s water resources for irrigated agriculture and other related activities. Its work covers irrigation infrastructure, agricultural water management, technical services, capacity development and support for the effective use of irrigation facilities.
Irrigation development can generate benefits beyond the farm. Reliable water supplies can encourage investment in agricultural processing, storage, input supply, transportation and other activities within the agricultural value chain.
Existing irrigation projects have already demonstrated the importance of infrastructure development in supporting smallholder farmers. Government programmes have also included the rehabilitation and modernization of major irrigation schemes, with projects such as Tono and Kpong forming part of broader efforts to improve irrigation infrastructure and agricultural productivity.
GIDA is also looking beyond infrastructure alone. Effective irrigation development requires appropriate land-use planning, efficient water management, farmer participation and strong institutional partnerships.
The Authority’s vision is to promote the development and utilization of available water resources for agricultural use in a way that contributes to food security and sustainable livelihoods.
As Ghana seeks to increase domestic food production and strengthen agricultural value chains, investment in irrigation infrastructure and agricultural water management will remain an important part of the country’s agricultural transformation agenda.
GIDA will continue working with government institutions, development partners, farmers, private-sector actors and other stakeholders to unlock the potential of irrigation and contribute to a more productive, resilient and sustainable agricultural sector.
