GIDA’S GENERAL OVERVIEW

Our Departments

GIDA is made up of five (5) departments each headed by a Chief Manager (Director). They are:

Planning and Coordination Department:  responsible for the formulation of policies, monitoring, and evaluation, preparation of annual work plans and budgets, project appraisals, financial and economic analysis, socio-economic and gender studies of old and new projects, etc.

Project Development: Conduct feasibility studies which include engineering and topographic surveys, mapping, geotechnical investigations, and design of irrigation infrastructures, construction supervision

Irrigation Technology and Innovation Department: Geotechnical assessment, GIS and remote sensing, quality control assessment in civil works, dam safety assessment, calibration of equipment, environmental impact assessment, etc.

Scheme Oversight: Backstopping of irrigated agricultural extension, agricultural water management, formation and capacity building of Water Users Association (WUAs), the oversight responsibility of operations, maintenance, and management of irrigation schemes

Human Resource Management & Legal and Administration: This department assists the Chief Executive in the day-to-day administration and management of the Authority. It is also responsible for the management of all estates of the Authority. It is also responsible for all legal issues of the institution.

 

 

FUNCTIONS OF GIDA

The functions of GIDA span across everything related to irrigation and drainage as spelled out in the law establishing the Authority. However, the day-to-day functions can generally be grouped into the following key areas:

  1. Water Resources Development: Sites identification, Survey and Mapping, Irrigation water management, Hydrological Studies (including modelling), Design and Costing of dams and appurtenant works, and irrigation and drainage infrastructure. Aquaculture infrastructure and livestock water point development
  2. Project Planning and Appraisal: Planning of new projects and Appraisal of existing schemes Operations and Management.
  3. Pre-feasibility studies: Desk study, sites identification/Reconnaissance surveys and Data collection for water resources development sites identification, ranking and selection of project sites, and environmental scoping.
  4. Detailed Studies: Conducting feasibility studies for new projects. This includes:
    1. Water resource assessment (water quality, quantity, and proximity to the site)
    2. Topographic survey and mapping
    3. Soil suitability and vegetation assessment
    4. Socio-economic assessment
    5. Environmental and social risk assessments
    6. Financial and economic assessments
    7. Preparation of preliminary and detailed engineering designs.
    8. Preparation of Probable Project Costs (PPC) based on the engineering designs

The broad areas of services include Preliminary field investigations (Reconnaissance survey and site identification, Engineering designs, and costing, Construction Supervision and monitoring, Aquaculture development, Operation and maintenance, Preparation of management and maintenance manuals, Environmental Impact Assessment, Agronomic surveys, soil, and environmental surveys, Dam Safety Analysis and Evaluation.
