Certification of Design on Irrigation Infrastructure.

As the agency responsible for irrigation in the Republic of Ghana it is mandatory �for all irrigation infrastructures to be checked and certified by the Authority before it is implemented. Generally, the designs have to conform to GIDA Standards.

  1. Reconnaissance Survey/Pre-feasibility Study for Irrigation Facility.

As a startup action in irrigation development a multi-disciplinary team of experts comprising Civil, Geodetic and Agriculture Engineers, Agronomist, Socio-Economist and Environmental Specialist and soil expert visit the sites of applicants to undertake a quick study to preliminary establish the viability of project.� The team produces a report to establish the way forward for further detailed studies. �It is a pre-requisite for detailed studies.

  1. Project Feasibility Study

The Authority carries out a detailed study of a project that the reconnaissance survey/pre-feasibility study establishes to be viable.� This involves carrying out surveying, mapping and investigations, designs and environmental studies� �to establish the economic and technical viability of the project.� �

  1. Topographic Survey and Mapping

The Authority undertakes topographic surveying and mapping for design purposes. This involves undertaking of surveying and provision of maps that provide basic data on the topography of the project area.� It provides details like rivers, existing land use, the vegetation, and existing features.� Normally the topography is presented by contours or spot heights. The Authority also carries out Cadastral Surveys to delineate interested holdings within project areas.

  1. Soil Survey and Mapping

The Authority provides soil maps, which cover the various soil types in a project area.� Among the maps provided are the Land/Soil suitability and capability maps.� Normally soil profiles are described, sampled and analysed both physically and chemically. The soil maps facilitate the design of irrigation layout and infrastructure as well as the specific crops to be cultivated.

  1. Provision of Technical Information on Irrigation.

GIDA has a multi-disciplinary team of experts on irrigation.� The team provides technical information on the types of irrigation systems available that can be used by farmers.� They also provide information to facilitate the selection of pumps for farmers, the selection of seeds, types of machinery that can be used for land development and preparation etc.� Information on Operation & Maintenance (O&M) , crop types , seeds� and on� all� aspects of irrigation.

  1. Study, Design, Construction� supervision �of dams

The Authority undertakes the study of valleys for the design of small earth dams with its appurtenant�� structures.� The construction supervision of dams is also provided by the Authority.

  1. Farmer Training and AEA’s

The Authority has a multi-disciplinary team of Agronomists and Engineers that undertake the training of farmers in irrigated agriculture.� They use the demonstration and Farmer Field School �(FFS) approaches / methodologies in the delivery.

  1. Crop selection and seed production

The Authority undertakes seed production in rice. They also assist farmers in the selection of crops for farmers based on the climate, soil types and the market forces.

  1. Capacity building for Water Users Association.

The Authority has been building the capacities of Water Users Association (WUAs) in water management and issues on group cohesion, recording, book keeping, operation and maintenance of irrigation� �schemes.

  1. Agriculture Water Management(AWM)

The Authority has been providing technical assistance in the area of agricultural water management. This includes soil and water conservation. Generally it involves topographic survey, mapping and design of water harvesting structures (that includes contour bunding)

  1. Aquaculture study and development

The Authority has been assisting Fish Farmers by providing technical assistance in the study and the construction �supervision of fish ponds and the management of aquaculture project.
